QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR
Do you forget what you want to say when you're in the doctor's office? Many people do... it’s common. Open communication is an important part of working together successfully with your doctor. Here are some things you can do to make the most out of your next doctor's visit.
Talking with your doctor at follow-up visits
Make a list. Well before your appointment, start making a list of all the things you want to ask, or discuss with, your cardiologist. Make the list meaningful for you, concerning the way you feel and what's on your mind. Every time you think of something, just add it to the list.
Make sure you remember to take the list with you to your appointment.
Consider bringing a family member or friend. When you ask questions, you’ll get answers. If you’re concerned that you’ll forget the information or instructions your cardiologist gives you, consider bringing a family member or friend who can help you remember.
Suggested questions to ask. Here are a few questions that might be helpful for someone who has just received a drug-coated stent to ask their cardiologist:
- How long will I be on the anti-clotting medication?
- What are the side effects of anti-clotting medications and what should I do if they occur?
- Is how I'm feeling normal?
- What will happen if I don’t take the anti-clotting medications as you prescribed?
- Should I get more activity, and what type of activity is best for me?
- Should I change my diet? What foods are good for me and what foods are not?
- What kind of help is available to help me quit smoking?
- Are there other things I could be doing to decrease the risk of heart disease?
