After receiving a stent, it is extremely important for you to take your medications
exactly as prescribed. Staying healthy and helping prevent additional complications
requires that you understand exactly how to take your medications, how long you
need to take them, and why you need to continue taking them—even if you are feeling
better.
After your procedure, your cardiologist will prescribe anti-clotting therapy to
help keep your arteries from narrowing or becoming clogged again. This is usually
a combination of aspirin and a prescription anti-platelet medication such as PLAVIX®
(clopidogrel) or TICLID® (ticlopidine)* These medications are important in helping
lower the risk of heart attack and/or stroke after your procedure. They work by
keeping certain cells in the blood from "sticking" together and forming clots around
the stent.
If you stop taking these medications before being instructed to do so by your cardiologist,
the chances of a blood clot forming on the stent, a heart attack, or even death
are increased.
